Kozhukattai / Modhakam

Kozhukattai Recipe

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi is the Hindu festival that reveres god Ganesha. A ten-day festival, it starts on the fourth day of Hindu luni-solar calendar month Bhadrapada, which typically falls in Gregorian months of August or September. The festival is marked with installation of Ganesha clay idols privately in homes, or publicly on elaborate pandals (temporary stage). Observations include chanting of Vedic hymns and Hindu texts such as Ganapati Upanishad, prayers and vrata (fasting). Offerings and prasada from the daily prayers, that is distributed from the pandal to the community, include sweets such as modaka believed to be a favorite of the elephant-headed deity. The festival ends on the tenth day after start, wherein the idol is carried in a public procession with music and group chanting, then immersed in nearby water body such as a river or ocean, thereafter the clay idol dissolves and Ganesha is believed to return to Mount Kailasha to Parvati and Shiva.

The primary sweet dish during the festival is modak (kozhukattai or modagam in Tamil). A modak is a dumpling made from rice or wheat flour, stuffed with grated coconut, jaggery, dried fruits and other condiments and steamed or fried.

Ulutham (Uppu) Kozhukattai / Black Gram Dhall Kozhukattai (salted)

Hai Friends!

Today I'm going to share Uppu Kozhukattai recipe with you all! Its made of Ulutham parupu or Black gram dhall! This is prepared as "Naivedhyam" for VINAYAKA CHATHURTHI! So, without any delay, lets go to the method!

Ingredients:

Black Gram Dhall - 1 cup
Green chilli - 2-3
Asafoitida powder - 1 pinch
Salt - to taste
Lemon - 1

For seasoning:

Oil - 1 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves - 2 strands

For making outer covering:

Raw rice flour - 1 cup
Salt - to taste
Gingelly Oil - 150 g
Take 1 : 1 proportion of rice flour and water. (If the rice flour is wet then 1 rice flour : 3/4 water will be enough)

Note: You can refer the method of preparing Home made Rice Flour for Kozhukkatti from my previous post!

Method

Outer Covering:

Heat 1 cup of water in a deep thick bottomed pan. Add required salt and 2 tsp of gingelly oil.

When it boils continuously, add the rice flour slowly with continuous stirring. Take care that no lumps are formed.

Continue to stir, until the flour becomes a thick dough. At this stage simmer the stove and close the pan leaving the laddle inside the pan itself. Switch off the stove and leave the dough aside for few minutes.

Now the dough will be thick! Mix it well with little water and gingelly oil and make it soft.

Poornam:

Soak Black Gram Dhall for about an hour.

With green chilli and salt, wet grind the soaked Black Gram dhall to a fine thick paste.

Grease the Idli plates with oil! Fill the greased Idli plates with the thick Dhall paste and boil for 8-10 minutes. (Just like Idli!)

Allow the dhall idli to cool for few minutes. Then crumple it with your hands into coarse chips or chunks! Season the chunks with mustard seeds and curry leaves.

Add lemon juice to the seasoned chunks and mix well!

This is the stuff or "Poornam" for Kozhukattai!

Take small ball of the dough; flatten it with hands and fill it with poornam and close it.

Prepare many such Kozhukattais and boil it for 6 minutes!

Your Ulutham (Uppu) Kozhukattai is ready! Serve hot or cold!

Will meet you with another healthy recipes soon!

Till then take care! Bye!

Happy Vinayka Chathurthi to you friends!
